The Bauxite Rotary Kiln operates based on the principle of counter-current heat exchange, where the raw bauxite ore is fed into the kiln at one end, and hot gases flow in the opposite direction. The kiln is a rotating cylindrical drum that gradually inclines, causing the raw material to move from the feed end to the discharge end over time. As the material moves through the kiln, it is heated by hot gases generated by the combustion of fuel (such as coal, natural gas, or oil) in the combustion chamber.

The rotary motion ensures that the material is evenly exposed to the high temperatures, typically ranging from 1000°C to 1100°C, required for calcination. During this process, the bauxite undergoes chemical and physical changes, primarily resulting in the formation of calcined bauxite, a high-quality, sintered product that is more suitable for alumina extraction, refractory applications, and other industries.
